Alison Swann talks about her experience in using movement and dance to support all areas of the primary school curriculum.

Alison is a Dance in Education Specialist with 30 years experience. She trained at Laban (now Trinity Laban) in Contemporary Technique and Movement Analysis.

Dance Educates strives to raise standards through a multisensory approach to learning, supporting teachers in delivering your curriculum through cross-curricular dance and movement sessions.

043: Ollie Tunmer – Beat Goes On

Ollie is the founder and Director of Beat Goes On. He is a former cast member of the hit show STOMP and its sister show, ‘The Lost & Found Orchestra’. He regularly delivers workshops, CPD and INSET for Teach First, School Direct, United Learning and Music Education Hubs throughout the UK.

He is also a qualified secondary music teacher and combines these experiences to deliver what he hopes are fun, engaging and memorable workshops.

He works with a number of international schools in the COBIS, BSME and FOBISIA networks, and delivers keynote speeches, most recently at the Latin American Heads Conference in São Paulo.

As Director of Beat Goes On, Ollie has developed a range of percussive workshops, which draw on participants’ own ideas, as well as developing skills and knowledge. Ollie also promotes the use of music as a means of encouraging well-being, for both individuals and teaching communities.

042: How music was embedded at Hartwell Primary School with Jayne Clancy

Jayne Clancy was Headteacher of Hartwell Primary School for 13 years. I spoke to her at the end of the summer term 2017 in her final weeks before retiring. I wanted to interview Jayne because living locally I know what a fabulously musical school Hartwell is. I didn’t realise at the time Jayne was retiring, so this is a really fitting look back at how  music in the school has played such a big part in creating a rich environment for the pupils.

I wanted to share how it is possible for you to put music at the heart of your school to aid the whole curriculum, not diminish it.

We discuss how the support of the staff and vision of the governors is so important in sustaining music which sounds like a fantastic platform from which the new Head Mrs Jamie Pardon can take the mantle.

Hartwell Primary is also one of the cluster schools that will be involved with my new music project with Andy Williams from EWS. You can listen to my interview with Andy about this here on episode 41.

041: Our primary music project with Andy Williams – Head of Music at Elizabeth Woodville School

Andy Williams is Head of Music at the Elizabeth Woodville School in Northamptonshire. Together we are creating a primary music project for local cluster schools to help improve transition at age 11 and parity in music. By supporting all the local schools to embrace music making, we hope to encourage a culture that the children involved will take into their secondary school years to enhance their lives.

We are going to offer:

  • The creation of a massed ensemble of instrumentalists from all the cluster schools
  • CPD for music co-ordinators and staff
  • In person visits to assess, support and extend what can be offered in each school
  • Opportunities to bring outside arts organisations to visit the cluster schools
  • Help with transition from primary to secondary
  • Specialist workshops in singing, rhythm and ensembles from EYFS to KS2
  • Share concerts and events with secondary pupils

With many years of music and teaching experience we will be visiting the schools, offering practical hands on advice and answering any questions that arise.
